Government Data Centre Technology Roadmap

Government Data Centre Technology Roadmap

The Singapore government launched multiple energy initiatives that will guide government agencies in formulating their technology master plans and funding initiatives to secure Singapore’s energy future and address climate change challenges.

i3 Solutions Group were appointed as the consultants for The Green Data Centre Technology Roadmap. This unique assignment provides a framework for carbon abatement in data centres spanning each IT and MEP discipline.

The Challenge

case-studies-1

The Green Data Centre Technology Roadmap provides a framework to assuage carbon emissions associated with existing and future data centres in Singapore. Whilst ensuring the continued growth of the industry and enhancing Singapore’s position as a data centre hub for the Asia Pacific region.

The desired outcomes of the Roadmap are:

  • The application environment including application services, operating systems and applications
  • Hardware energy overheads such as fan energy, DC-DC converter losses
  • Energy conversion losses caused by power and cooling systems

The Result

case-studies-2

Almost all of the previous research and analyses on data centre energy use has focused on power, cooling and IT power supplies.

This roadmap addresses the collective impact of:

The Roadmap identified new and emerging technologies that enable improvements in energy performance beyond that currently stated by local and international standards, which will make it possible for Singapore’s data centres to overcome local climatic constraints and generic inefficiencies affecting the global data centre industry.

The Roadmap also provided a top to bottom review of data centre energy use, analyses and recommendations for the implementation of each technology based upon KPIs such as NPV and CO2 abatement.

Each recommendation is quantified with indicative incremental adoption costs, deployment curves, abatement potential and marginal abatement cost.

Some key findings from of the Roadmap included:

  • Significant energy inefficiencies resulting from software
  • The amplification of software energy losses caused by the cascade effect arising from compound upstream energy losses by the physical IT infrastructure, power and cooling systems.
  • Coherent integration of energy flows across the IT stack will significantly reduce energy consumption
