Nascent IT energy reduction methods are now emerging from development and gaining wider industry acceptance. Energy at the facilities level was a fundamental first step, however this merely represents the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the ‘nitty-gritty’ true potential to reduce energy costs. New innovative technologies are applicable primarily to IT infrastructure and software enabling further major reductions in energy consumption and an inherent benefit of upstream energy reduction due to the cascade effect of software-hardware-facility. Even more encouragingly, many of the energy saving technologies offer positive NPVs with a short term return on investment. As lead author of the 20 year Singapore Green Data Centre Technology Roadmap and other energy reduction initiatives around the world, i3 has the insight to offer clients’ best-in-class efficiency advice across the technology platform. In 2012 i3 was appointed by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to write the Green Data Centre Technology Roadmap. In addition we regularly undertake assignments that enable our clients to reduce data centre energy consumption. Our current research interests in energy reduction strategies include: Energy efficient software, sleep state adoption, dynamic workload allocation, dynamic power management, renewable energy sources and data centre micro-grids.
