Assessment of Fuel Cells Application in Data Centres for Greenhouse Gas Abatement Benefits.
i3 Solutions and the Data Centre GHG Abatement Group has published a new white paper titled: “Assessment of Fuel Cells Application in Data Centres for Greenhouse Gas Abatement Benefits.”
The new publication provides a high level perspective on the application benefits of and challenges to hydrogen fuel cell use for data centre back up and primary power.
With a simple description of fuel cells by operation and type, the new paper details the different fuel cells suitable for use in data centres, together with details of primary and back-up power configurations.
Included are the sustainability benefits of fuel cell technology in terms of emissions abatement, reduced transmission losses and potential for heat reuse. The paper shows the comparison of the Sustainability Performance Indicators of some Fuel Cells against Gas Turbines and Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT), using Natural Gas as the fuel.
While the paper focuses on fuel cells suitable for data centre applications, the production, transport and storage of hydrogen fuel are not in scope - although some of the on-site challenges of fuel cell use are covered.
